Figure Unveils Figure 02: A Humanoid Robot Powered by OpenAI for Seamless Communication

Figure has officially launched its latest innovation, the Figure 02 humanoid robot. Building upon the Figure 01 model introduced in 2023, the Figure 02 promises advanced features and enhanced capabilities. The initial teaser video highlights the robot’s design and potential, drawing parallels with consumer electronics product demos rather than offering a live demonstration of its functionality.

In the latest footage, the Figure 02 robot is seen moving with a deliberate, bent-leg gait, set against the backdrop of Figure’s office demo area. The video also features two additional robots carrying totes, showcasing a practical application of humanoid robots in logistics.

A significant development for Figure 02 comes from its partnership with OpenAI, which played a key role in Figure’s $675 million Series B funding round in February, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. This collaboration underscores the growing interest in integrating advanced neural network technology into humanoid robots.

Humanoid robots like Figure 02 are designed to work alongside humans, particularly in industrial settings where they can be useful on factory floors. The robot is equipped with speakers and microphones, enabling it to engage in natural speech conversations and enhance its interaction with human coworkers. This communication capability is crucial, as it allows for better instruction and transparency in the robot’s actions.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini have set new standards in natural language processing, making them ideal candidates for integration into robotic systems. The ability to communicate naturally with robots adds a layer of safety and effectiveness, especially when these robots are designed to operate autonomously without safety cages.

Figure is not alone in exploring the use of AI for human-robot communication. Agility has demonstrated its efforts in using generative AI for similar purposes, and Elon Musk’s projects, including Grok AI and Optimus, are expected to align with these advancements.

Figure has also initiated pilot programs with BMW, showcasing an earlier, tethered version of the robot performing autonomous tasks with the aid of neural networks. The Figure 02 has already been tested at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, marking the beginning of what could be a broader application of the robot.

The Figure 02 features several upgrades from its predecessor, including six RGB cameras, an onboard visual language model, and enhanced CPU/GPU capabilities. The robot’s hands have also been redesigned to offer 16 degrees of freedom, reflecting ongoing debates in the field about how closely robotic hands should mimic human anatomy.

Despite the current focus on warehouse and factory applications, Figure envisions broader future uses for the Figure 02, including commercial and home environments. The company’s commitment to combining human-like dexterity with advanced AI suggests that the Figure 02 could soon become a versatile tool across various sectors.
