How to unsend a message in Gmail: step-by-step instructions

Gmail is a free email service from Google that allows you to conveniently send, receive, and store emails. Thanks to its simple interface, powerful spam protection, and integration with other Google services, Gmail has become one of the most popular email services worldwide. Users get a large amount of free storage space and can easily manage their correspondence on both computers and mobile devices.

Everyone has faced a situation where an email is already sent, and a second later you realize there is a mistake, a forgotten attachment, or the message was sent to the wrong recipient. Fortunately, Gmail provides the option to undo sending an email — but this function only works for a few seconds. In this article, we will look at how the “Undo Send” feature works and how to increase your chances of catching the email before it is read.

The “Undo Send” feature in Gmail

After sending an email, a notification appears at the bottom of the Gmail screen:

“Message sent. Undo / View message”

If you click “Undo” within a few seconds, Gmail will stop the email from being sent. The message will reopen in the editor so you can make changes or delete it.

Important: this works only during the short time the notification is visible.

How to increase the undo send time

By default, Gmail allows 5 seconds to undo sending, but you can increase this interval up to 30 seconds. To do this:

  1. Go to Gmail settings (gear icon → “See all settings”).

  2. Find the “Undo Send” section.

  3. In the dropdown menu, select your preferred time: 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.

  4. Scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

Now you will have more time to undo sending an email.

What to do if the time has passed

Once the set time has elapsed, you can no longer undo sending. The email will be delivered to the recipient, and you cannot retrieve it.

If this happens, you can:

  • Send a new email with corrections or explanations.

  • In extreme cases, ask the recipient to delete the previous email (if appropriate).

  • For business Gmail accounts (Google Workspace), administrators may restrict access to the email, but this only works in some cases and is not always reliable.

Helpful tips

  • Always double-check the recipient’s address, subject, text, and attachments before sending.

  • Use the “Schedule Send” feature if you need time to reconsider your email.

  • Enable reminders or use templates if you often forget important details.

Undoing email sending in Gmail is a useful feature that can save you from awkward situations. However, it requires quick action. Set the maximum possible send delay so you have up to 30 seconds to decide. And most importantly — don’t rush to click the “Send” button, especially when it comes to important or sensitive emails.
